Concert of Sacred Music performed by St. Michael's Choir School of Toronto
at St. Robert Bellarmine Church
Since 1937, St. Michael’s Choir School has served the Archdiocese of Toronto by educating and training the boys’ choirs that sing every weekend at St. Michael’s Cathedral. The school is unique in offering an enriched academic program integrated with a lively ministry of sacred music. It is one of only six choir schools in the world affiliated with the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome. Each student admitted to the Choir School is trained in vocal, technical and instrumental music, and sings in at least one of the school’s choirs.
St. Michael’s Choir School has been touring since 1967. The annual tours serve to bind the group together by giving the boys an ambition to achieve excellence in their music in settings other than St. Michael’s Cathedral. The tours also helped to put the School “on the map” in a way that had not been possible before, even though it was recognized for the excellence of its liturgical work in the Cathedral. Past tours have included visits to Italy, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, as well as across Canada and the U.S.
St. Michael’s Choir School is following up their successful 2013 visit to the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church in Vatican City with a visit to the most Catholic state in the U.S.—Massachusetts. For the first time in its 47-year touring history, SMCS will be performing in and around Boston, April 30–May 7, 2014. St. Robert's is fortunate to have been selected as a performance venue.
St. Michael Choir School Director, Stephen Handrigan says:
“We’re ... looking forward to our concert in Andover, as the warm welcome and sense of occasion in smaller cities makes for a memorable experience for our young singers.”
Plan to join us on Monday evening, May 5, at 7:00 pm for a truly unforgettable musical treat!
